Bergview College first opened its doors in January 1999 under the name Wizkid, in response to the growing need for quality, English-medium education in the Matatiele community. The school was founded by Mrs. L. van Zyl (current Board of Trustees member), who worked closely with parents and completed the necessary due diligence before registering the school with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education to offer Grades 1–12.
The school began with 56 learners across two playschool classes and one Grade 1 class. From there, BVC expanded steadily, adding one grade each year for the next eight years. By 2010, the school had grown large enough to add additional grades annually, culminating in its very first matric class in 2012. During this time, the school operated on two campuses: the original premises for playschool to Grade 6 learners, and a nearby campus for the senior grades.
With demand for quality education continuing to rise, BVC entered its next phase of development. The school acquired a third campus by purchasing Matatiele Play Centre, which became home to the playschool and pre-school classes. Additional classrooms were built on-site, and the Grade 1–3 learners were also relocated there.
Today, BVC is proud to serve 658 learners, supported by a dedicated team of 31 educators and 18 support staff. In its commitment to long-term growth, the school has also purchased land from the Matatiele Local Municipality, earmarked for the development of sports fields and the eventual consolidation of all phases onto one unified campus.
BVC is owned by the Wizkid Trust, a public benefit and non-profit organisation. The Trust is managed by three trustees, including one independent trustee, and is a recognised non-profit entity.
